Lessons from QCA Primary Scheme of Work Unit 1b - Growing Plants. List of lesson which videos have been produced for:
What do you know about Plants?
-
This lesson provides a video to introduce the topic and shows some common food crop plants being grown and prepared to eat.
-
The video is not intended as a substitute for the suggested activities of getting the children out of the classroom to observe plants in the local environment, but as an introduction to this activity.
That plants grow.
-
This lesson's video shows some plants learners should have seen and starts to introduce the steps needed to get plants from the field onto their plate. This theme is covered in more detail in the next lesson.
-
The video is not intended as a substitute for the suggested activities of showing real plants, but helps to meet the breath of study by showing plants in there context.
That plants provide food for us.
-
The videos in this lesson start by asking why plants are important to humans. They then show some common foods and how they get from the field onto your plate.
-
This fits the Breadth of Study by showing food in domestic and environmental contexts.
That plants have roots.
-
This lesson's video shows a Spider plant which has become pot bound with its roots growing out of the bottom - you could link this to showing a real plant you have in classroom and then discuss the wheat seedlings roots also shown on the video.
-
Ask learners why they think a small seedling has such long roots - why are roots important to the plant?
-
This fits the Breadth of Study's domestic and environmental contexts, by linking a plant learners may have in own home to a wheat seedling, showing the roots which they have probably not seen.
