Calving Introduction...
Although the videos show beef cattle calving it applies equally to dairy cattle.

Stage 1 of Calving.
The first signs that a cow is about to start calving are when she becomes restless and separates herself from the rest of the group.
The next sign is when the amniotic sac appears. The amniotic sac is the bag of fluid which contained the calf whilst it was in it's mothers womb.
Stage 2 of calving.
In the next stage the calf should soon start to appear, in a diving position with it's front feet first.
This should be followed shortly by the head, and then the rest of the calf. Once at this stage the rest of the calf can come out very quickly so you may miss it - almost as we did when filming some of these calvings!
The calf will soon be up and suckerling once it has been born.
Final Stage of Calving.
A good Stockman is always on hand in case the cow needs any assistance at calving and to make sure the calf takes it's first breath ok.
