Hedgerow Habitats
What are hedgerows like?
Life in a British Hedge - hedgerow as a habitat.
Often overlooked, British hedgerows are a haven for many plants and animals. We just give a taster here as hedgerows are almost as varied as the number there are. According to the countryside survey of 2007 there are477,000 Km of managed hedges in Britain. Although this is down from the 508,000 km 10 years earlier I would wager this number is increasing judging by the amount of new hedges and old revived hedges observed in our area on the Yorkshire Wolds. This is largely due to the payments farmers now receive via the stewardship scheme for maintaining and replacing hedges.
Farmers have been recycling for years.
