What is a farm manager?

As farm manager does what it says on the tin! This is the person who organises the day to day running of the farm and the job is about as varied as there are number of farms.

Some farm managers are the actual owners of the farm or they may be employed by the owner who takes no part in the farm at all. Some farm managers of large farms spend all the day managing, while some will also spend some of the day doing some of the actual physical work on the farm or helping out the other workers.

Most managers will act as the 'spare' worker covering for workers who are ill, or helping out at busy times, like harvest or lambing. This may just be in the form of taking over driving the combine harvester or tractor while the regular driver has their dinner break for example, or working along side the shepherd or tractor driver most of the day.

The farm manager will also spend a fair amount of time in the farm office (often his vehicle!) organising, buying and selling produce as well as completing all the paper work now needed for stock movement, farm subsidies etc. Some larger farming enterprises may also have a secretary to help with these tasks.
