What is an Agricultural Engineer?

“ a knight in shining armour because to the customer whose machine has broken down they turn up just like a knight in shining armour to fix their problems.  This is a great boost to their self esteem but also puts them under a lot of pressure but the satisfaction at the end of the job is great.”
Ben Burgess MD, Ben Turner

Having often experienced the frustration of a broken down combine harvester in the middle of a field of corn I must say I agree with this as the RBM Van pulls up and Mov gets out to sort out our problem!!!

Gone are they days when a bit or band and a 6"" nail would keep you going!!! Modern agricultural machinery is now very high tech and more often than not needs a laptop to get it going as well as a spanner.

Indeed one of the combine drivers I filmed recently loves to tell the tale of how he was cutting wheat with his new Claas Combine only to get a phone call from the Claas factory in Germany telling him he needed to speed up to get a better sample of wheat - the factory was monitoring his new machine from Germany and the technicians there could see that some adjustments need to be made - more crop through the machine so that the threshing mechanism worked better!

The agricultural engineer in fixing all the modern agricultural machinery must have a much wider breadth of knowledge than the person who fixes your car as they deal with a much wider and often more complicated variety of technology. From Combines, to tractors, ploughs to precision spraying equipment with satellite navigation and laser guided steering!
